GoLite Jam Backpack Review

GoLite Jam ReviewFor a pack that weighs 23 ounces(size large), the GoLite Jam has great features and load carrying capacity. It may be the best $89 pack on the market for mountaineering.

The GoLite Jam has a narrow pack profile that allows for good balance and arm swing clearance. That is an important feature to look for when selecting a pack for technical mountaineering.

The climbing features include the ability to carry two tools with Velcro tool retention straps, a climbing rope, skis/poles, and a small daisy chain for hauling and additional tool attachment.

The GoLite Jam is made of Dyneema® Gridstop fabric, which is strong and lightweight. However, Dyneema® Gridstop fabric is not durable enough to withstand the abuse and abrasion of dragging the pack across sharp rocks, so a fair amount of care needs to taken when using the pack off trail.

When packed correctly the GoLite Jam can be used to carry loads up to 30 pounds. It does not have a frame suspension system, relying on the contents in bag to create a virtual frame. To improve the load carrying, use a ground pad rolled as a cylinder inside the main compartment. There are five compression straps(4 side and 1 top) to compact the pack contents into a "virtual frame", and control loads The GoLite Jam has wide sides on the hip-belt that contour around the hips to prevent slippage.

Add it all together and you have a great mountaineering pack at a very competitive price.
