The Meseta (Central Plateau) covers nearly half of the entire country of Spain. The Meseta is a high plateau that averages about 700 meters (2,300 feet) in elevation in the North, and 600 meters (2,000 feet) in the South.
The Meseta is surrounded by a series of mountain ranges including the Cantabrian, Sierra De Gata and Sierra Guadarrama in the North and Central regions, and the Sierra Morena and Sierra Nevada in the South.
These mountains separate the Meseta from the Costa Verde, the Ebro valley, the Mediterranean and the valleys of Andalucia.
The Cordillera Cantábrica, a limestone formation, runs parallel to, and close to, the Northern coast near the Bay of Biscay. Its highest points are in the Picos de Europa, surpassing 2,600 meters (8,530 feet), with the highest peak being Torre de Cerredo at 2,648 meters (8,688 feet).
