Metolius Stomp Crash Pad Review

return to » mountain climbing gear

Rock/Creek Outfitters

The Stomp Crash Pad by Metolius is a great choice for anyone who is having to count pennies, but still needs a solid, well cushioned pad.  The Stomp is highly durable with ripstop nylon and a hinged design that provides you with a safe folding point that lays flat when opened at the base of a problem.  Shoulder straps are padded for a more comfortable hike and can be transported by the suitcase style, molded carry handle when going short distances.
A great pad for the cost-conscious climber.

Unfortunately, we have to charge a $10 fee for shipping boulder pads due the extra expense of shipping an oversized package. To keep this fee to a minimum, Rock/Creek covers part of this cost.

Features:

  • Diamond rip-stop 420 denier nylon shell with polyester 900 denier landing surface.
  • Foam specs are 1.5 in. closed cell foam and 2.5 in. open cell
  • Hinged design provides a safe and durable folding point for compact carrying.
  • Padded shoulder straps
  • Rounded corners reduce wear
  • Suitcase-style, molded carry handle
  • The cost-conscious choice for buying a bouldering pad with all the necessary features.

Does it's job! The pad has saved me a few times.

Not too shabby

Good pad once it becomes broken in. In all reality, the rip stop does help with tears on the pad and keeps them from becoming bigger which is nice because the pad ripped up on my second trip some 7 months ago. I do recommend whenever there are rocks underneath the landing that could potentially rip the pad that you should reverse the pad's landing side though to avoid this. Other than that it is a trooper of a pad and about to take it out for yet another durability test this morning :D

great entry level pad

Does The Job

It can definitely soften up your fall. Its also a pretty good campsite-couch. My only problem with it is that it occupies half of the trunk of my car by itself.

Awesome Value

The hinged design on this pad is such an awesome idea, I don't know why more pads don't have it. The fabric isn't ballistic nylon, but it's pretty darn tough! The buckles are strong and no-fuss. This is a killer pad for the money. Seriously, you won't find a better pad at this price.

this pad saved me a hospital visit.

Being from philadelphia, the closest climbing spots outside the city are almost entirely bouldering. me and my climbing partner picked up this pad about two years ago, and i gotta tell you this pad is awesome. During one of our weekly bouldering trips i was taking on a v5 that extends around 20 ft. high. now this problem wasn't new to me, but i missed a jump up to a jug and took about a 15 ft fall on my back onto this pad. i got up unharmed and walked away. this pad is awesome and durable and rugged as all hell. weve used it on multiple trips, taken multiple falls and it still looks and works new (despite the dirt). i highly reccomend this pad for begginers and advanced climbers alike. and it doesn't make a bad pad to sleep and chill on either.

Great!

The pad is in perfect shape and feels real good to fall on.

Problems, problems, problems

We have used Metolius products, specifically their crash pads, for years. They are having problems with the latest Stomp, and I highly suggest not buying one. Get the Boss Hog, it is everything you want in a crash pad, beautifully and ruggedly made, stiffer than the stomp, but spend the extra money!
Rock Creek is the best, were awesome in returning and getting us what we wanted. I would, and will, do business with them again. Thanks Rock Creek

good pad.....

Saved my ankles!

let me say that climbing high balls with a pad is a much more relieving experience. This pad saved me and my friend's ankles (and who knows what else) from 25+ falls multiple times. Comfortable land and durable material, however don't place it on top of thistles. I learned that the hard way. got a couple pokes in it, but it didn't effect it at all.

Great Pad

A superb pad for the price. Easy to transport and the diagonal hinge is a great addition. Great padding, very tough to bottom out on. Highly suggest it to anyone looking for affordable padding

It's nice to have even when it isn't needed for the climb, it makes a pretty good campsite couch. When it is there to catch your fall it'll do the job as long as you land on it.

Good Value

The foam on this one is really dense, which is great on longer falls. Its also pretty thick. A bit stiff on short falls but, lets be honest, no one is too worried about the short ones. The angled hinge makes the center feel solid like a taco style pad, without making it awkward to fold. The price is right too, since its one of the cheaper ones out there. The only thing I could ask for is a couple more loops to pull on when moving it around unfolded.

Great pad

Extremely lightweight and comfortable straps. I have not yet bottomed out even after high falls. Fits easily in most trucks or other parts of the car. I've gotten mine very dirty and after the mud drys it wipes right off looking new again. It looks cool too!
