There are only 14 summits that rise above 8000 meters, every one of them projecting into the "death zone"(where all humans rapidly degrade and eventually die without supplemental oxygen).

Ten of the 8000 meter peaks are in the Himalaya, and nine (all but Nanga Parbat) are in Nepal, on its border, or very close. The other four are clustered closely in the Karakoram Range (technically not part of the Himalaya).

It is unlikely that all the heights given in the chart on the right are correct to the nearest metre or foot; indeed, problems of definition of sea level can arise when a mountain is remote from the sea. Different sources often differ by several metres, and the heights given on this page may differ from those on other lists.

The Seven Summits are the highest peaks on each continent.

The United States High Points is a list of the highest point in each state in the United States.

In the united states the most popular climbs are:

Peak Name Feet Meters
McKinley (Denali) 20,320  6,194
Whitney 14,505  4,421
Rainier 14,411  4,392
El Capitan 7,569  2,307
